Game Combat
Questions about how the combat system works
We sure do.
Usage: cast 'magic missile' <victim> cast 'magic missile' <direction> <victim> Duration: Instantaneous * Causes a bolt of magical energy to be thrown from the casters' hands at the victim, causing damage. The amount of damage being done depends on the percentage of mana the caster still has. The higher that percentage the more damage. * Trainer: Mage & Priest Guildmaster - Medieval Dimension - Olde Yorke Dr. Seuss - Future Dimension - The Space Port
You want high armor, low AC. Armor affects the special armor stat on worth, armor on equipment is distributed accordingly to its armor slot on worth. AC affects AC-apply and the lower you are the less damage you take. However, for every -1 AC you get -2 speed. So the choice is yours whether you want to be fast, or not take as much damage.
High Armor is good and Low AC is good.

Questions about how the game works
We suggest that for your first 10 levels you go through the mudschool and the zones around it. There's enough there to level you to 10 and beyond.
After 10 levels:
Prehistoric:
Old Carthage (has some tough mobs) and Carthage Bay
Medieval:
Sanctuary Haze, Tournament Place
Old West:
Buffalo Bill's Circus
Future:
The Spaceship Titanic, Golf Course, The planet Endor, The planet Dagobah
And if the above zones become to easy but you still want somewhere not too hard:
Prehistoric:
Greek Archipelago, Ali Baba's Cave
Medieval:
Archers in Old Yorke, Ice Palace (will be a bit tough), NightDragon Realms
Old west:
The Range, Dirt Farm, Legend
Future:
The Gamegrid, The planet Tattooine, New Goznemia, Necromunda II, Planet Reptilia
This information is also posted on the Seekers board by Diandra.
The quick answer is yes. The longer answer goes like this: You need to change your battleprompt. To do this type bprompt and then the variables you want in your prompt.
You can add your own fields into your prompt using ones from the list below.
The '%' character means a variable.

Note: bprompt is the prompt only shown in battle. We also have the basic prompt that is shown outside of battle. There are some things you only need to know when fighting - like how much damage you deal to the mob you're fight or how much damage you're taking from said mob, which is why we have the two different prompts. Now, having said that, the prompts automatically change when you're in battle. You do not have to remember any command to change your prompt.
To go back to the original prompt type:
prompt default
and
bprompt default
When you're in the room with a trainer type skills or spells depending on what you're looking for. If you want either, just type in one then the other. It will list the skills and spells that particular trainer can teach you. Once you know what you want and you're with the trainer that has it, type practice (skill/spell name). For example, if you're with the trainer that teaches magic missiles, type practice magic missile.
Mounts and pets can be useful in many ways: they can hold items for you, you
can order them; mounts help you reduce the loss of movepoints when you travel
and you can participate in races with them.
You can buy them in pet shops and livery stables (for instance in Old York and
the IGTCs), they will be automaticly charmed and follow you when they land in
the room. You can also order your own personal mount or pet, but this requires
a playerhouse with an extra room, and is very expensive. For more info on
playerhouses see The 4D Real Estate Company near Recall.
You can't buy more then 3 pets at the same time.
To ride a mount, first mount it, to move you just type the direction, like
east and off you go. If you have low mountskills you might occasionally be
thrown off. The animals stay grouped with you until you ungroup them or
until they get killed.

Helpers are those people who have proven that they are willing to help new people adapt to our mud as it's quite a bit different than other muds out there. Also, if you go through our mudschool we have special vouchers for you to find (to help you learn some of the special things about 4Dimensions) and you can turn them into a helper to receive a special prize. But, Helpers are not the ONLY people that help others. If you use our newbie channel to ask a question, almost anyone is apt to help you out - provided you're not asking the solution to a quest as it is our belief that finding out the answer yourself is the only way to have fun figuring out quests.
Current Helpers:
Prometheus (Immortal Helper)
Fiachra
Lucrete
Jason
Loran
Alpha
(Will be updated as the list expands/shortens)
No, but roleplaying does add another level to the game. If you want to just go out and kill things, you're more than welcomed to, but if you want to roleplay, all you have to do is find someone that wants to roleplay with you. What you roleplay is up to you. RPL's (Roleplay leaders) will even give out award points to people that roleplay (just so long as they know about it so you may have to drop them a line or post on the website) and you can use those points to buy things that only roleplayers can have.
Current RPL's are:
Hesara
Lucrete
Riley
Natalya
We've players from all over the world, you probably just came on during a "down time". While the game is owned by someone in the United States, we've got quite a few players and immortals from Sweden, New Zealand and the Neatherlands which is quite a time difference, so don't worry, if there's not a lot of people on, that can change quickly.
We have Lightsaber and Lumberjack currently in the game.
Others are to come.
Sure any of the help files are useful - in fact, help new is a good help file for newbies.
The following commands you use without help in front of them:
- Commands gives you an extensive list of known commands for the game.
- Toggle lets you alter certain settings.
- Who lets you see who's currently online.
- Where shows you who is in the same area you're in
- Look around (or l around) shows you the name of the zone you're in and the level range for the zone.
- Tell < playername > <message> lets you talk to that particular person.
- Re lets you reply to someone that just sent you a tell.
Thank you for asking, yes there is. If you list the items that a shopkeeper sells (type list) then type in id #number of the item you like. You will then see what the item does without using a scroll of identify before you buy it.
[NOTE] [CHANGES] >>list To get information on any shop item type: ID <itemname>, or ID <itemnumber> ## Available Item Cost ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1) Unlimited A piece of candy 72 2) Unlimited A piece of pizza 364 3) Unlimited A shot (firebreather) 728 4) Unlimited A cup (coffee) 7285 [NOTE] [CHANGES] >>id 2 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- a piece of pizza is a type of food made from base-material It can be taken and worn on TAKE Its weight is 2 and its valued at 500 coins. ----------------------------------------------------------------------
It means that you are a first tier player that has not remorted - in other words, you are the true new player.
Other people that are your same level without the asterisk means they've remorted at least once.
4 Dimensions has, well, 4 time dimensions to travel in, depending on what your tastes are. There is Future, Medieval, Old West and Prehistoric, each of the dimensions are full of areas for players of ever class and every level. Type help, then the name of the dimension you wish to travel in (example help prehistoric) and it will list the levels and names of zones. Need to know how to get to one? Go 4 south of recall to the Map room where you can find directions to any of our many zones. For new players, Diandra has a useful post on the seekers board for suggested areas to go after mudschool.
If you've identified the item, you can just examine it and it will remind you what it does. BUT, you have to have identified that particular item. Just because you've identified the Rod of Justice once, doesn't make ALL Rod of Justices give up that info on examination.
There are two ways to get to the seeker's guild.
- The first is by holding the feather.
- The second is by typing recall, go south and go down twice.
Ah, so you thought that feather was useless did you?
Silly you. But first, let's check to see if you actually have a feather.
Type eq - are you holding it? If so, just rem feather. If not, head on down to Bart's (2 south of recall) and say I am new here.
Bart's really a sweet guy and he'll give you a new feather.
There could be a few reasons for this... First, type i (short for inventory).
[You are carrying 0 of 45 items] [You have a total weight of 3/1260] Nothing.
The first line tells you how many items you are carrying out of your maximum possible.
Are you at (or in some cases exceed) this limit? If so, you need to decide what you can get rid of (or what you can put in a bag).
If that's not the case, then look at the second line - total weight. Is the total weight of the objects you're carrying over your maxweight?
If it is neither of these things, then check to make sure you have enough gold (the shopkeeper usually tells you if you don't, but you can just type gold to find out).
Another reason is you may be invisible. Most of the shopkeepers won't sell to someone they can't see. To remedy this, type vis. This will, of course, end the affect of invisibility so you will have to cast it upon yourself again (or do whatever you did to be invis in the first place).
First check to see if you're wearing your backpack (type eq).
If you are remove it (rem backpack) and then get your object out of it
get < object name > from < bag name >
If that doesn't work, your problem may be that you don't actually have a backpack.
Shops sell recall scrolls and detect invis potions - you just have to find the right shop. Also, not all recall scrolls are called recall scrolls, so check your scrolls carefully. Olde Yorke has a magic shop west of town square that sells such items and is one of the easiest to get to
Most of the best equipment comes from quests, so you'll have to use your mind to get the best stuff, but you can get pretty decent items from the harder zones as well. Shopkeepers sell only basic equipment so don't expect them to have much.
Finding a Zone Flag is the proof that you have explored a certain zone thoroughly. After collecting 10 different zone flags, hand them over to an immortal in exchange for 3 bronze tokens and a certificate with the proof that you have found all 10 flags.
*
Now and then a new batch of zone flags is announced. Meaning that new zone flags have been added in new zones or already existing zones.
With the release of a new batch a competition is held: the first Clan to report a zone flag will get it reset in their HQ permanently as a trophy.
When all zoneflags of that particular batch are reported, the Clan that has found the most flags of the new batch, will win the Contest. This contest also includes the Loners. If a Loner can claim a new zone flag, the flag will be reset in the Hidden Shelter
You can enter the mudschool (and venture way newbie zones) until level 20.
After that, you're going to have to find new areas to explore.
Referring to the captain of the newbie school future dimension. While we can't GIVE you his name, we can assure you that it is somewhere in the descriptions in the future dimension of mud school. Look at everything in the rooms - any noun has the ability to let you know what his name is. If you look around you will find it.
Remember, don't tell anyone this information as it is 'quest knowledge'.
Type recall, go two north, say please to the guard (type say please) and at Gordy's say school (type say school). You have to say school or 'school, not just type in school. (' is a short way of doing say.)
4 Dimensions is a text based mud so there are no pictures - no graphics. By reading the description of the room, you get an idea of what the room is like and if there are any exits. 4 Dimensions gives players the choice of running around and killing things - hack-n-slash-, doing quests or a combination of both. Doing quests gives you a chance of getting the better equipment out there because it takes time and brainpower to do.
